Through Oliver''s experiences the novel depicts the harsh reality of life for the poor in Victorian England particularly in the underbelly of London''s criminal underworld. As the story unfolds Oliver becomes embroiled in a web of deceit and betrayal and discovers shocking secrets about his past. He eventually finds love and support in the form of the kindly Mr. Brownlow and the faithful Nancy a member of Fagin''s gang who risks her life to help Oliver.
