Oliver Twist

Dickens' time was characterised by cruelty in society and Oliver Twist takes aim at it by describing the life of a victim. with the same name orphan. Oliver's life takes several turns as he moves from the workhouse to a group of pickpockets to a loving household eloquently illuminating the struggles of disadvantaged youngsters in nineteenth-century England. He encounters some of Dickens' most iconic characters along the journey including the evil Fagin the cunning Dodger and the enigmatic monks. Oliver Twist is a classic because of Dickens' empathy for orphans' predicament and his vivid depictions.
