On Literary Issues in Tygodnik Powszechny (1945-1953)

About The Book

During its initial publication period between 1945 and 1953 the Krakow-based Tygodnik Powszechny played an exceptional role in the history of Polish press. In the era of growing Communist terror and censorship control which followed the ‘liberation’ of Poland by the Red Army the journal managing to withstand political pressure garnered a large and varied readership. As a universal independent Catholic socio-cultural periodical it went on to become a phenomenon throughout the whole of Central and Eastern Europe appropriated by the USRR after the Second World War. This work focuses on the literature-related issues discussed in the periodical which have never before been scrutinised scientifically. The reception of the selected works by Polish and foreign authors turned out to be a sort of spiritual retreat and an intellectual asylum in the times of the forcibly imposed Communist ideology.
