The story is set against the backdrop of the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839–1842) and follows the experiences of the protagonist a young ensign named Lindsay. As the British forces retreat from Kabul amidst a series of disastrous events Lindsay finds himself caught up in the chaos and danger of the retreat. Throughout the novel Lindsay faces numerous challenges and trials including battles betrayals and personal tragedies. As he struggles to survive and make his way back to safety Lindsay also grapples with questions of honor loyalty and duty in the face of overwhelming odds. Only an Ensign is typical of Grant's works featuring elements of adventure romance and historical drama.
