The novel explores themes of virtue corruption and the struggle for independence both personal and political. The subtitle The Secret Witness refers to the hidden truths and concealed motives that drive the plot forward. As Constantia delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding Ormond and the people she meets she uncovers a web of conspiracies and hidden agendas that challenge her perceptions and test her moral convictions.
