About The Book

The novel is set in the early 18th century during the period leading up to and following the Jacobite Rebellions. The central character is Sir John Ker a young Scottish nobleman who finds himself torn between his loyalty to Scotland and the allure of adventure and romance. Sir John is a passionate supporter of the Jacobite cause which seeks to restore the exiled Stuart monarchy to the thrones of England Scotland and Ireland. Sir John's life becomes even more complicated when he falls in love with Lady Margaret the daughter of an English nobleman loyal to the reigning Hanoverian king. Their love is forbidden not only because of their conflicting political loyalties but also due to the deep-seated animosities between the English and the Scots during this era. Despite these obstacles their relationship develops into a central plotline of the novel symbolizing the larger conflicts and reconciliations between the two nations.
