Meantime The Only Really Critical Edition Of The Poem The Learned And Elaborate Work Of Merkel Had Appeared And I Have Thus Been Enabled To Give A Better Text. When To This Is Added That I Have Had Abundant Leisure For Preparing It I Am Surely Justified In Hoping That It May Be The Means Of Causing This Most Pleasing And Valuable Poem To Be More Generally Read And Studied Than Is The Case At Present.. I Have Sought To Give All Necessary Aid To The Student But I Would Not Encourage Idleness By Giving Mythic And Historic Narratives In The Notes; I Have Always However Referred To Accessible Works Where They May Be Found And That I Deem To Be All That Could Be Justly Required..
