Writing this book has been a source of emotional satisfaction and accomplishment.
My late father Shri Krishnavallabh Pauranik (1929–2016) lived with Parkinson's disease for the last 15 years of his life.
In this book I have a dual role — that of a neurologist-author and that of a son. My experiences with my father's Parkinson's journey have been woven in at intervals. As a physician-teacher and as a son I speak alternately in different ways and from different perspectives.
I hope that this blend of the scientific and the personal will not only enhance knowledge and understanding about the disease but also promote empathy and compassion. Such efforts are rare in Hindi. I have always firmly believed that Hindi and other Indian languages have a vast and elegant capacity to express scientific facts. Unfortunately this potential has neither been explored nor developed. The state of affairs is dismal — neither are there seekers nor providers. Who should come first?
I have taken the first step as a provider. I do not know how useful this work will prove to be or whether it will catalyse an increase in the desire for such efforts. Whatever the outcome I have contributed to the cause.
