Pancreatic Pathology

The pancreas is an organ which has both an endocrine and an exocrine function. It secretes several important hormones such as insulin glucagon pancreatic polypeptide and somatostatin. Also it is responsible for the secretion of pancreatic juice which contains digestive enzymes and bicarbonates for the break down of lipids carbohydrates proteins and the neutralization of the acid. A perforation of the pancreas may potentially lead to pancreatic self-digestion and damage to organs within the abdomen. Some of the pathological conditions of the pancreas include pancreatic cancer pancreatitis diabetes mellitus etc. The surgical removal of the pancreas or part of it is known as pancreatectomy.
