The book analyzes the problem of pluriactivity in the west of Santa Catarina Brazil using as a case study the phenomenon of settler workers in a pulp and paper company. It examines the situation of family farming and its recent transformations changing the way we understand peasants and their relationships in rural areas. It aims to investigate the history of small and medium-sized farms in the state of Santa Catarina to discuss the problems they face as well as the changes that have taken place in recent years to find out what leads small and medium-sized farmers to combine working on their land with salaried work and in the same vein to understand the changes in their lives in terms of economic social and family organization.
