Parthiban Kanavu is a Tamil classic novel . It is the first of a trilogy which is set during the reign of Narasimha Pallavan (Narasimhavarman). It is a work of historical fiction in which the protagonist Vikraman who is the son of the Chola king Parthiban attempts to fulfill his father's dream of restoring the lost glory of the Chola dynasty by gaining independence from the Pallava ruler of the region.Parthiban the Chola king is killed in a battle against the Pallavas over Parthiban's refusal to pay taxes to them. Parthiban's son Vikraman vows to seek revenge against Narasimhavarman. However due to his uncle's betrayal Vikraman is arrested and banished from India.Vikraman returns later and finds out that his mother has been kidnapped by a savage tribe which believes in human sacrifice. He also ends up falling in love with a beautiful girl Kundhavi and comes to know that she is the daughter of his mortal enemy Narasimhavarman. The book ends with a twist in the tale and a shocking revelation.Parthiban Kanavu is a captivating and fast-paced story which not only describes beautifully the cultural and historical conditions that existed in the bygone era but also has elements like romance and suspense which make it an interesting read.
