The book centres around the life of Dr. Mukundan born in a communist family in Central Travancore in the middle year of Twentieth Century. It depicts many historic events in Kerala India and the world: the formation of Kerala State the first Communist Government the liberation struggle in Kerala the split in the communist movement Naxalbari movement Emergency in India the fall of Communist regimes in the world and the rise and fall of left wing parties in India-all these are depicted in this. At the same time it narrates the life of a Medical Student in the campus his career as a doctor and also his sentimental relationships. Side by side there is also the story of the disintergration and fall of an aristocaric family -Valiyaveettuvilayil- Mukundan’s maternal ancestral family. He on his part though following all these historic events with keen ethusiasum and always standing with the left movement is destined to stand at the margines of the path not able to travel in the main stream of social transformation.
