Patrick S. Gilmore

About The Book

Patrick S. Gilmore is remembered today for his efforts galvanizing the country with his two grand concerts the World's Peace Jubilee and the National Peace Jubilee. Gilmore immigrated from Ireland in 1849 and soon led the Boston Brigade Band. After much success in 1855 he moved to Salem Massachusetts and led the Salem Brass Band. Although Gilmore's time in Salem was brief his leadership led the Salem Brass Band to national status. The research focuses on material culled from local newspapers of the day the published sheet music Gilmore produced during his time in Salem.

The Salem Brass Band was organized in Salem in 1837 with Mr. George W. Felton as leader. Sometime in 1849 the band secured the leadership of Mr. Jerome H. Smith until 1855 when Gilmore came to Salem to lead the band. Gilmore led the band for only 3 years and when he left Salem the band continued under the leadership of Mr. Kehrbahn.

Gilmore left such an impression on Salemites that Salem High School gives out an award to a graduating student in honor of Gilmore. The award is called the Patrick S. Gilmore Band Award. It recognizes excellent musicianship and dedication to the Salem Band and Color-guard Program.
