Patrick and Victoria are two young people who through a chance meeting fall in love. Although their passion for each other develops an intensity that happens only once in a lifetime they are faced with seemingly insurmountable difficulties beyond their control. Victoria is the daughter of one of the wealthiest and most powerful families of the Ascendancy the Protestant English rulers of Ireland. Patrick though well-educated is a local fisherman's son from Ennismore an island off County Clare's harsh but beautiful Atlantic coast. To repay a kindness Patrick is given a job at Ballinahich Castle the home of Victoria's family its wealth and splendor a stark contrast to the one-roomed island mud cottage he grew up in.
