Patterns of Redemption

About The Book

What happens when artworks are theoretically displaced in time? Do they take on fresh meanings? Both Piero della Francesca and Stanley Spencer painted ‘Resurrection’ pictures considered as statements of belief within their cultural milieus. Seemingly one picture is the antithesis to the other but could artistic intention be forever ‘redemptive’ - A statement of Being ? Musician and social commentator Frank Zappa ostensibly denies ‘spiritual’ aspirations and challenges the notion of artistic ‘feeling’ as little more than a conditioned response. But did his quest for musical perfection fly in the face of his notorious cynicism defining his output as ‘redemptive’ too? This book is aimed at students of Art History and Aesthetics. It is the main contention here that the human predicament requires the artist to re-present his vision to others in order to redefine reality. To this end the role of the artist is worthy of perennial consideration.
