Peace and Security in East Africa

About The Book

The East African Community (EAC) is an intergovernmental organization made of Burundi Kenya Rwanda Tanzania Uganda and South Sudan. Almost all Partner States have experienced long or short periods of civil war which jeopardized their internal security. In most cases insecurity in these countries is due to refusal to abide by principles of democracy good governance rule of law and respect of human rights. In such a context a viable legal and institutional framework to handle peace and security matters is a key to a safe and successful regional integration in the EAC. This book analyzes the viability of the EAC peace and security legal and institutional framework in the light of the United Nations African Union and the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) peace and security architectures. The author is not assuming that the United Nations African Union and ECOWAS peace and security frameworks are perfect. He is however suggesting that the EAC can borrow what has worked from them in order to prevent manage or solve peace and security issues in the East African region.
