Pedagogical standard in northern Croatia at the end of the 19th century

Elementary education of the Military Frontier during the period of ban Ivan Mažuranića in the area of Sibinj municipality operated in difficult circumstances. Laws had to be implemented consistently the bureaucratic apparatus was slow for the needs of everyday education. Material conditions have improved after 1876 when a recommendation was made that arrived to administrative municipalities directly from the superior administrative body i.e. the Požega County to form a heading called public classrooms. From that moment the material conditions have been improving especially hygiene so the municipality has become a permanent material support for elementary schools. The main problem of schools after material conditions was the discipline of students and preventive but also effective action in this direction. Military Frontier was in the process of demarcation and Mažuranić’s era demanded modernization and liberalization but at the same time in the area of the Border there were no equally effective new countermeasures. Finally physical punishment again become possible but with the presence of a school supervisor.
