Luiz Carlos Prestes was a Brazilian communist leader. During the 1920s he participated in an anti-government movement called Coluna Prestes which earned him the nickname The Knight of Hope. At a time of struggle against growing Nazi-fascism in Brazil Prestes led a communist revolutionary insurrection that was suppressed by government forces linked to Getúlio Vargas. With the advent of the Estado Novo the communists were arrested along with Prestes who was convicted and isolated for nine years. In 1942 amid persecution Jorge Amado wrote a book about Prestes using revolutionary pedagogy to organize the masses and the party in favor of the revolution.
