Peggy by Laura E. Richards follows the story of Peggy Montfort a young girl from Ohio as she embarks on a new chapter at Miss Russell's School. Arriving late Peggy finds herself in a room that initially feels bare and unwelcoming. However a surprise package from her Uncle John and cousin Margaret transforms her space into a cozy haven filled with thoughtful gifts that remind her of home. As Peggy navigates her first days at school she encounters a mix of personalities from the kind-hearted Bertha Haughton who becomes her first friend to the more superficial Viola Vincent and the aloof Vivia Varnham. Peggy's initial shyness and homesickness are compounded by a series of awkward incidents including a misunderstanding with a classmate over sharing geometry work and a mishap in the gymnasium that leaves her embarrassed. Despite these challenges Peggy's determination to make the best of her situation shines through. Her love for geometry and her eagerness to learn help her find common ground with her teachers particularly Miss Boyle who recognizes Peggy's potential. As Peggy begins to settle in she learns the importance of friendship resilience and staying true to herself in the face of new and sometimes daunting experiences.
