About The Book

Pericles Prince of Tyre is a play written by William Shakespeare believed to have been written in collaboration with George Wilkins in 1608. The play is a romance and tells the story of Pericles a prince who travels from Tyre to various kingdoms encountering a series of challenges and adventures along the way. The play begins with Pericles seeking the hand of the daughter of King Antiochus. However he discovers that Antiochus has committed an incestuous relationship with his daughter and Pericles flees for his life. He travels to various kingdoms where he encounters pirates treacherous rulers and other dangers. Throughout his travels Pericles meets and falls in love with Thaisa the daughter of King Simonides. However their happiness is short-lived as Thaisa seemingly dies in childbirth while they are at sea. Pericles mourns her loss and buries her at sea but she is later revealed to have survived and is reunited with her husband and daughter Marina. The play ends with Pericles and his family returning to Tyre and being reunited with his people. Pericles Prince of Tyre is a play that deals with themes such as fate family and redemption. It is known for its episodic structure exotic settings and fantastical elements. The play is less frequently performed and studied compared to other Shakespearean plays but has gained a certain level of popularity in recent years.
