Periodontal Furcation & It's Involvement

Periodontal disease is characterized by the loss of connective tissue attachment induced by the presence of periodontal pathogens within the gingival sulcus. The furcation is an area of complex anatomic morphology that may be difficult or impossible to debride by routine periodontal instrumentation. Routine home care methods may not keep the furcation area free of plaque. The etiology of periodontal disease is complex and so is its management. One of the most compelling challenges faced in management of periodontal disease in multi-rooted teeth is furcation involvement.
