Petroglyphs of Ladakh

Petroglyphs the ancient rock carvings left behind by early civilizations are among the earliest forms of artistic and cultural expressions. In the rugged landscape of Ladakh these carvings stand as silent witnesses to thousands of years of human history offering a glimpse into the lives beliefs and artistic sensibilities of those who inhabited this high altitude desert.This is my second attempt to write a book related to history and culture of Ladakh. My first book titled history and culture of Dard people of Ladakpublished in 2020 got good response from readers.This book aims to document and preserve the petroglyphs of Ladakh shedding light on their historical and cultural significance. It serves as a tribute to the rich heritage of the region fostering a deeper appreciation for these ancient art works and the stories they tell.Being inspired from my father historian Sonam Phuntsog my fascination with Ladakh’s petroglyphs began during my travels through the region where I encountered these mysterious carvings. Their beauty and historical value inspired me to delve deeper and this book is the culmination of years of exploration research and a desire to share their story. Rock art experts like Viraf Mehta Quintine DaverProfessor Tashi Dawa Choldan GashaLobzang Visuda and others have contributed immensely in this field.This endeavor would not have been possible without the guidance of experts well wishers the support of local communities and the contribution of fellow researchers who shared their insights and knowledge.I invite all to embark on this journey through the pages of this book exploring the fascinating world of Ladakh’s petro glyphs.
