Phonology of Arabic Portuguese and English Loanwords in Odia

About The Book

Phonological Nativization of Arabic Portuguese and English Loanwords in Odia by Shashikanta Tarai is an original piece of research work in the filed of Optimality Theory (OT). It presents a constraint-based analysis of sound patterns of loanwords in Odia an Eastern variety of Indo-Aryan language which is spoken in the territory of Odisha. The primary concern of this study is to understand the way Odia speakers organize the sound system of loanwords in the process of nativization. If the source languages such as Arabic Portuguese and English have a set of segmental features and prosodic patterns that differ from the borrowing language like Oida then how do the native speakers of Odia produce and process the Arabic Portuguese and English loanwords in Odia speech? This question is answered by illustrating the core and peripheral phonological patterns of Odia that are involved in the process of adoption and adaptation of loanwords in Odia.
