PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY IN PERIODONTICS
English

About The Book

The primary goal of periodontal therapy is to eliminate bacterial deposits by removing the supragingival and subgingival biofilm. Conventional methods have involved mechanical biofilm removal and the supplementary use of antibiotics. However there is a strong possibility of the development of resistance to antibiotics by the target organisms. Recent advancements in technology have led to the development of a novel minimally invasive approach namely Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). It is used in both the initial and the maintenance phase for the treatment of periodontitis. The combination of PDT and scaling and root planing synergistically enhances bacterial eradication and fosters improved periodontal health.
