Phytochemical Analysis of Sugarcane Flower (Saccharum Edule)

About The Book

Saccharum Edule commonly known as sugarcane flower is a type of vegetable. Every vegetable including Saccharum Edule has a benefit of its own. However because no phytochemical research has been done on this sample that would support the beneficial findings this vegetable is frequently underestimated by both researchers and public. Saccharum Edule health benefits are attributed in part to its unique phytochemical composition. This study was designed to find the phytochemical content inside of Saccharum Edule to analyze the bioactive compound and active compound content. Using methanol Saccharum Edule was macerated to extract the active compounds inside the sample. Using Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and active compounds using seven types of antioxidant tests which are quantitative and qualitative. There were eight types of bioactive compounds present in the sample namely glycerol alcohol phenol acetic acid fatty acid ester acid and saturated fatty alcohol. For active compounds Saccharum Edule has the highest total phenolic compound (572.46 mg/ml) tested and the second highest are total flavonoid content (21.17 quercetin/g) gained from the sample.
