Phytosanitary practices in the Port-Berg�� District Madagascar

The study was carried out in the baiboho of Port-Bergé Madagascar. The aim of the study was to determine the diversity and behavior of farmers before and after phytosanitary treatments. The methodologies adopted consisted in making inventories of pesticides used in agriculture. This was followed by farmer surveys to determine sources of risk farmers'' at-risk behaviors and finally calculations of the Treatment Frequency Indicator. The results identified 4 groups of pesticides: insecticides herbicides fungicides and acaricides according to their target but insecticides were the most numerous. Farmers'' low level of education lack of safety tools and poor management of empty packaging are the main sources of risks associated with pesticide use. As far as discomfort is concerned fatigue and skin and eye irritation are cited most often by farmers. In the event of discomfort 45% of farmers surveyed do nothing.
