Piezosurgery - Applications in Periodontology

About The Book

Osteotomies are well-established procedures in oral and maxillofacial and periodontal surgeries. Traditionally the osseous surgeries have been performed by either manual or motor-driven instruments. Manual instruments provide good control when used to remove bone in areas of less dense mineralization but are difficult to control in cortical bone. Therefore motor-driven instruments were used in areas of dense bone but these instruments generated a significant amount of heat in the cutting zone which needed to be minimized by irrigation. Piezoelectric surgery represents an innovative ultrasonic surgery technique for performing a safe and effective osteotomy or osteoplasty that contrasts with the traditional hard and soft tissue management methods with rotating instruments.
