Plutarch in English 1528-1603. Volume One

<p><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>Plutarch was one of the most popular classical authors of the English renaissance. These volumes present selected translations from the </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>Moralia</em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)> and the </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>Parallel Lives</em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)> and put them in the context of Plutarch's wider influence in Tudor and Stuart England. They include selections from two established classics of English renaissance translation North's </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>Lives</em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)> (1579) and Holland's </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>Morals</em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)> (1603) but also print a number of less well-known translations of individual </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>Essays</em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)> and </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>Lives</em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)> in some cases for the first time: Thomas Wyatt's </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>The Quiet of Mind</em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)> (1528); Thomas Elyot's </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>The Education of Children </em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>(1530); Thomas Blundeville's </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>The Learned Prince</em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)> (1561); and Henry Parker Lord Morley's </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>Life of Theseus</em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)> and </span><em style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)>Life of Aemilius Paullus</em><span style=color: rgba(63 63 63 1)> (1542-46/7). By representing the full range of translations of Plutarch in the period the volumes highlight the variety of translation practices and the different social political and cultural contexts in which Plutarch was read and translated in Tudor and Stuart England.</span></p>
