About The Book

Dick Leonard has been a liberal minister in the New York City area for fifty-four years. His ministry has included civil rights promotion music and the development of schools and camps. He has also found time to visit many countries with his wife Polly and to marry more than 3000 couples in those years.

In Ports of Call he has collected eleven of his sermons and seven other writings all composed during his twenty-four years at the All Souls Church. The piece The Day the Russians Went Home by the Reverend Bruce Clear completes the story of the visit to the U.S. in 1990 by twelve Russian young people and their two adult chaperones. Dick describes his day of involvement with the Russians as the day I will remember after I have forgotten all the others.

An exquisite collection of sermons and other writings bound together not only by the wisdom compassion and buoyant good humor of this author but also--like stars marking destinations on a journey toward life's meaning--constituting nothing less than Richard Leonard's soul map. A truly lovely book.

--Forrest Church
