Post-apartheid Transformation- Race in a Student Community in Pretoria

About The Book

Tuksdorp was a post-graduate residence at the historically white University ofPretoria South Africa. Over eleven years into a new epoch of non-racialism inSouth Africa these students lived in racially segregated communes. Thereexisted a strong notion amongst participants that cultural differences betweendifferent races made it difficult to share living spaces. Black participantsemulated a black township lifestyle which they considered as the only genuineblack culture. This work sees this construction of black culture as part ofblack students' struggle to resist experiences of white Afrikaner culture anddomination at the university.
