The building regulations of each federal state specify the planning for new buildings. Different regulations on fire protection are defined for each federal state depending on the building class. In this paper the main differences between the building regulations of Baden-Württemberg and the Hessian building regulations regarding fire protection will be explained. In particular the feasibility and limitations of timber buildings will be discussed. Furthermore the fire behaviour of timber building components will be discussed and compensation measures will be described which are mainly used in building construction and in buildings from building class 4.
