This study analyses rock-shelter sites on Rote and Sawu Islands examining the development of stone artefact manufacture and use of raw materials in each site excavated as well as whether there were differing intensities of tool use during different periods of occupancy. The changes through time in quantities and varieties of shell species and their habitats are also investigated. The results are compared with the archaeological records from sites in East Timor and further afield.
