Probiotics are defined as organisms and substances that contribute to intestinal microbial balance in his original definition. Probiotics were created and applied to aquaculture for both environmental and consumer health reasons. A probiotic is a bacterial supplement made up of one or more cultures of specific non-pathogenic strains of bacteria. A wide variety of live microorganisms including yeasts photosynthetic bacteria lactic acid bacteria and various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria are included in probiotics. When added to ponds or tanks in sufficient quantities they may improve the health of the organisms being cultivated in aquaculture.
