Professional Socialization and Women Participation in Mathematics

The under-participation of women in the mathematicalsciences at the doctoral level is of great concern tothe mathematics community in the United States ifnot to the nation and perhaps other nations as well.Based on a study at two mathematics departments inthe U.S. this book explains a successful model ofdepartmental policies that enhance professionalsocialization ultimately increasing the recruitmentand retention of women in the doctoral level. Theauthor discusses U.S. policies on mathematics;intervention measures by U.S. government agenciesmathematics communities and universities;socialization approaches; and theoretical frameworksfor understanding the socialization of graduatestudents.
