Protecting the Rights of Victims of Natural Disasters in Nigeria

As the world continued to face challenges associated with natural disasters the inhabitants of the global south are worst hit because of their unique vulnerabilities as further compounded by the underlying structural crisis of statehood. Therefore as the leaders of the world sustain the negotiation on climate change commitment should be channeled towards supporting marginal economies to guarantee social economic and cultural rights. Indeed the socio-economic situations of most Nigerians have increasingly made them susceptible to the hazards of natural disasters. Protecting the Rights of the Victims of Natural Disasters in Nigeria presents a timely overview of the typology and effects of natural disasters in Nigeria and identifies the broad legal and institutional response mechanisms for disaster risk reduction (DRR) in Nigeria. Beyond these formal arrangements the unique character of the society where victims of natural disasters are absorbed by extended family members should be encouraged and harnessed.
