About The Book

Do you have a goal or dream that you are trying to accomplish? Are you faced with obstacles or challenges that are preventing you from accomplishing your goal/dream?Would you like to overcome the major challenge that is preventing you from achieving your goal/dream?If you answer yes to any of the above then this book may be beneficial to you. The book is about a students (nurse midwife and educator) fight to overcome her major challenge-racism while trying to achieve her dream of obtaining a doctoral degree. This true story is portrayed by a character known as Hilda Jay and includes self-help information using the acronym PUSHING. Hilda is a nurse a midwife and an educator who was recruited from the Caribbean to work in the United States of America (USA) when there was a shortage of nurses. She was very excited to start a new adventure and her thoughts about this prospect were very positive. One can imagine the disappointment she felt when she experienced substandard treatments because of the color of her skin especially while trying to achieve a terminal degree. This deviation from her high hopes and expectation left her feeling marginalized frustrated and discouraged and almost killed her dream. Realizing that this treatment was not unique to her but that many students of color are frustrated with the unfair treatment they experience in their programs at their different colleges/universities she identified that the attrition rates of blacks indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) in some college programs are extremely high. As a result the author is prompted to look at ways to motivate these students to succeed and reach their goals. As a midwife she uses her experience with women in labor and birth to identify seven principles that have been very helpful to her in achieving her goals despite tremendous obstacles. She knows that for women experiencing natural childbirth it takes tremendous endurance profound determination and immense effort to push through their often-severe pains and sometimes discouragement to give birth. Thus the term PUSHING. The principles include Prayer Unwavering faith Self-control Hope Integrity Nourishment (physical and spiritual) and Gratitude which foster Unwavering trust in God and in ones ability to overcome and triumph. Although written with students in mind it is the intention of this author that any individual facing any kind of challenges will be able to use these principles to overcome their challenges and triumph.
