Ramona is an 1884 book by American author Helen Hunt Jackson. It depicts the life of a mixed-race Scots-Native American orphan girl who experiences racial discrimination and suffering in Southern California following the Mexican-American War. The work initially appeared as a weekly serial in the Christian Union[1] where it quickly gained enormous popularity. It has seen more than 300 printings[2] and has had four cinematic adaptations. Since 1923 a play adaption has been performed yearly outside. The novel had a significant impact on Southern California's culture and reputation. Its emotional depiction of Mexican colonial life helped the area develop a distinctive cultural identity.
