She later retrained as a literacy specialist.</span></p><p><span style=background-color: rgba(0 0 0 0); color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>Marilyn found many opportunities to teach children who had difficulty learning to read. She has taught many students (including adults) to read and write English.</span></p><p><span style=background-color: rgba(0 0 0 0); color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>She still does this as a private tutor and has an adult writing class.</span></p><p><span style=background-color: rgba(0 0 0 0); color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>After sitting with many frustrated students who did not know how to decode (sound out) words Marilyn devised a series of lessons that allowed students to sound out words quickly.</span></p><p><span style=background-color: rgba(0 0 0 0); color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>These lessons are the foundation of this book.</span></p><p><span style=background-color: rgba(0 0 0 0); color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>Modern reading research has shown the crucial role of phonics in learning to read write and spell.</span></p><p><span style=background-color: rgba(0 0 0 0); color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>Many children fail to gain the ability to read and write because they lack the understanding of how the English alphabet system works.</span></p><p><span style=background-color: rgba(0 0 0 0); color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>Apart from her teaching career Marilyn spent some time as an educational consultant for two publishers.
