Reason Rhetoric and the Philosophical Life in Plato's Phaedrus

In a novel interpretation of Plato’s <I>Phaedrus</I> Tiago Lier<I></I>argues that Socrates’ defense of rhetoric stems from a tension between the desires that motivate speech and the limited power of speech to realize those desires. This tension culminates in a philosophical ethic that Socrates and Plato cultivate through their respective forms of rhetoric.
