Excerpt from Records of Officers and Men of New Jersey in Wars 1791 1815<br><br>On account of the disturbed condition of the Indian tribes on the northwestern frontiers Congress passed an act approved March 3 1791 entitled An Act for raising and adding another Regiment to the Military Establishment of the United States and for making further provision for the protection of the frontiers.<br><br>This regiment was commanded by lieutenant-colonel Commandant George Gibson of Virginia and a battalion of four companies of infantry known as the New Jersey Battalion was raised in this State under the denomination of levies and Were called into the service of the United States for a term not exceeding six months.
