Relations between masters and slaves in Monte Alegre (1870-1875)

About The Book

The history of slavery in the hinterlands of Bahia always leads to good discussions and has increasingly attracted the attention of historians as there are still many gaps to be filled. With this in mind the aim of this work is to understand what relations were like between masters and slaves in the town of Monte Alegre after the abolitionist laws were passed. It was therefore necessary to search for various historical documents from the period in order to understand the strategies used by the slaves to achieve freedom and on the other hand to understand the ways that the masters used to maintain their rights to property; reasons that led to the conflicts that were analysed in the research. Even though we know that there are still gaps that need further study in the future we can conclude that the result was very satisfactory because as well as providing the information we aimed for at the beginning it enabled new discoveries to be made further expanding our knowledge of Monte Alegre.
