Remembering at the End

<p>The image of Bhishmadeva the revered ancestor of the Kuru dynasty lying upon a bed constructed entirely of arrows on the battlefield of Kurukshetra is one of the most profound and puzzling scenes in human history. Bhishma was defeated having valiantly fought on the side of the wicked Kauravas aligned with Duryodhana whom many regarded as the worst criminal leader in history. The political alignment seemingly fell on the side of <em>adharma</em>. One might expect such a passing to be viewed as ignominious or filled with regret yet Bhishma's departure from this world is universally celebrated as the perfect way to die. This book examines why the end of Bhishma's life-a moment where he was defeated in war and appeared to be a material failure-was in fact the ultimate success.</p>
