About The Book

Reminiscences of a South African Pioneer is a memoir written by W.C. Scully a South African pioneer who lived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Scully was born in Ireland in 1855 and emigrated to South Africa with his family in 1873. In his memoir he recounts his experiences as a farmer hunter and explorer in the South African bushveld. Scullys memoir provides a vivid and often entertaining account of life on the South African frontier during the late 19th century. He describes the challenges of farming in a harsh and unforgiving environment as well as the dangers posed by wild animals and hostile tribes. Scully was also an avid hunter and his memoir includes many stories of his adventures in pursuit of big game. In addition to his experiences as a farmer and hunter Scully also played an important role in the exploration and development of the South African bushveld. He was one of the first Europeans to explore the region and he played a key role in opening up new areas for settlement and development. Throughout his memoir Scully displays a deep love and appreciation for the South African bushveld and its people. He also reflects on the changes that took place in South Africa during his lifetime including the growth of the mining industry the rise of Afrikaner nationalism and the increasing tension between black and white South Africans.
