Renate

Eight year old Renate tried to escape Nazi Germany when she boarded the S.S. St. Louis with her mother on May 13 1939. The St. Louis had 938 Jewish passengers including 200 children many of them under the age of 10. Every passenger on the ship had a legal landing certificate to Cuba but were turned away when they arrived. The captain of the ship pleaded with the United States to take in the Jewish passengers but were told to return to Nazi Germany. The voyage of the St. Louis is one of the most tragic events in human history. Renate: A Jewish child who escaped Nazi Germany is the story of one of the few survivors of the St. Louis.
