Representation and Black Identity

About The Book

In this book we present a discursive and cultural study of how blackness is represented in primary school Portuguese language textbooks. The theme chosen highlights the contribution of black people to Brazilian culture with a view to the constitution of local society and the establishment of healthy relationships in primary school classrooms. It also emphasises the construction of students' critical thinking in relation to the insertion of black people their culture and identity in Brazil. It invests in the (re)signification of the discursive figure of black people in our society and culture aiming to write a new history of black people in Brazil overcoming the stigma of a memory rooted in the heritage of a country that lived through slavery. In light of this the work points to possible advances in Portuguese language textbooks that emphasise the discursive figure represented by black people.
