Representation of Sub-Saharan Africa in the Swedish media

The study investigates how sub-Saharan Africa is represented in the Swedish print media Dagens Nyheter and how second generation immigrants of Sub-Saharan African background perceive and relate to the representation of Sub- Saharan Africa in the Swedish mass media by using quantitative and qualitative methodology. Hence the study deploys a mixed methodology to answer the two research questions. In doing so the findings from the content analysis of DN showed that crises news is the dominant news about Sub-Saharan Africa. The findings from interviews further indicate that „negative‟ news and images dominate the representation of Sub- Saharan Africa in the Swedish mass media. In addition to that the results reveals that participants believe that representational practices of Sub-Saharan Africa in the Swedish mass media subjects second generation immigrants of sub-Saharan African background to various forms of stereotypes and prejudice as second generation immigrants of sub-Saharan African background.
