Resistance of malaria-carrying anopheles to insecticides

About The Book

Malaria is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children in sub-Saharan Africa. To combat this infection two main preventive interventions are implemented by governments: the massive use of long-acting impregnated mosquito nets (LLINs) and indoor insecticide spraying (IRS).Unfortunately the deployment of these two interventions has coincided with the emergence of vector resistance to insecticides. In the context of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the international community's vision of malaria elimination the evolution of this resistance and its impact on the performance of these two control methods must be monitored on a regular basis and to do so it is important that the NMCP has qualified personnel to carry out this surveillance.Malaria vector control is the key to global malaria control and elimination efforts. It is a critical strategy for reducing and later interrupting transmission.
