The aim of this article is to contextualise the process of education in Colombia and Pereira understanding that what happened in the city has many connections with national politics. The first section considers some of the relationships between education and modernisation in the formation of the Colombian nation. Then in a second section we review how educational models and methods were connected to the political regimes and the major issues of concern during the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. The third section presents the case of Pereira from the information offered by regional and local historiography.
