Rienzi The Last of the Roman Tribunes

Rienzi is a historical novel written by Edward Bulwer Lytton first published in 1835. It tells the story of Cola di Rienzo a Roman commoner who rises to power in the 14th century as a result of his populist and nationalist beliefs. The novel begins with Rienzi witnessing the mistreatment of the Roman people by the nobility and the Church. He becomes convinced that the only way to bring justice and freedom to the people is to overthrow the corrupt ruling class and establish a republic. With the help of his friend he begins to organize a rebellion and gains the support of the Roman people. Rienzi becomes the Tribune of the Roman people and quickly sets about enacting reforms to improve their lives. He establishes a new government introduces new laws and restores order to the city. However his attempts to unify the Italian states under a single republic are met with resistance from the ruling classes who view him as a threat to their power. Ultimately Rienzis reign comes to a tragic end when he becomes too powerful and is betrayed by those closest to him. He is forced to flee Rome and is later killed by a mob. Overall Rienzi is a compelling historical novel that explores themes of power corruption and the struggle for freedom and justice.
