About The Book

Roister Doister is one of the earliest English comedies often considered the first true comedy written in English. The play attributed to Nicholas Udall is a lively farce that follows the character of the boastful foolish and self-important Miles Roister a man who believes he is a ladies' man and a great wit but is in fact a blundering and clueless character. The central plot revolves around Roister's attempt to woo the beautiful widow Dame Christian Custance despite his lack of charm sophistication and wit. Roister convinced of his own worthiness seeks the help of his friends who recognizing his vanity take advantage of his gullibility. Meanwhile Dame Custance and her maid who see through Roister’s pretense devise a clever plan to outwit him.
